This letter is unsigned and a lenghty one. It discusses Markham Doing editorial work on a history pamphlet which lead to him becoming a member of A Patriotic League Which someome made him President of without his knowledge. There are still problems with is Columbian Novel and this advisory board he was involved with.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
